Zion of Atlanta, GA

Zion’s beginnings can be traced back to 1984 when pastors from Hendersonville, NC, West Columbia, SC, and Live Oak, FL, started serving a nucleus of CLC families in the area. Early in 1998 the group was formally organized as Zion Ev. Lutheran Church and delegates were sent to the CLC Convention. At the same time, a search for a more suitable worship location led to vacant office space in Lawrenceville, a suburb northeast of Atlanta. The space was converted into a chapel which seats 50, plus a small overflow area.

In 1999 the congregation welcomed its first full-time pastor, John H. Johannes, who accepted a one-year exploratory call. Early in 2000 the congregation was granted full mission status, and a permanent call was extended to Pastor Johannes. During the summer a parsonage was purchased near the chapel. Following Pastor Johannes’ retirement, the congregation called seminary graduate Nathanel Mayhew to serve them. He was installed in September of 2002, and continues to serve as Pastor.

In its brief history as an organized congregation, Zion has hosted the Traveling VBS twice, as well as the Southeastern Pastoral Conference. The congregation recently relocated to their current worship location, at  468 Northdale Road – Suite D, Lawrenceville, GA 30045.

Average Sunday attendance is 18. Services are held at 1 l:00 A.M. with Sunday school and Bible class at 10:00 A.M. The congregation’s web site is: www.CLCLutheran.org/Atlanta.
